Collection of Health Data from General Practice Project
Future plans revealed. The future of the project becomes much clearer. Project AimsCHDGP is one of the national facilitating projects within the NHS Information Management & Technology (IM&T) Strategy. It is working towards maximising the potential of GP clinical computer systems, both for storing clinical data and for using that data to improve clinical care and service delivery. GPs have used computer systems in the clinical environment for some years, but only recently has it been possible to extract data from the different systems available in a systematic and coherent way, to enable valid comparisons to be made. The data produced by the project are intended to be used by the participating practices (to improve clinical care and data quality), and by their local Health Authorities, and latterly PCG/Ts (to aid in local decision-making on clinical priorities and commissioning). There will also be some comparative analysis of the data submitted at a national level. The project recognises the importance of working at a local level, by building upon existing local data collection schemes, and introducing new ones. The pilot stage started work with twelve schemes, from Northumberland to Somerset, in a variety of areas - urban, rural and mixed. Each scheme provides training and support to their participating practices in data quality and information management skills, and also extracts, analyses and interprets the data stored in the GP systems. A further ten schemes joined in the second year of the pilot stage, and in the current year we have continued to support the 22 existing schemes and taken on a further ten. Several others are in the process of completing their project plans and employing a facilitator. Guidelines have been devised for the project, comprising advice on setting up and managing a scheme, recording a core data set, using MIQUEST query software, and analysis and interpretation of clinical data. The Guidelines also include a security and confidentiality policy, which protects both patients and practices. To see a chart showing the organisation of the Project, click here.
The CHDGP TeamThe CHDGP Team at Nottingham provides the following services to local schemes:
The Clinical Information Consultancy develop, maintain and support the MIQUEST query software. The project completed the two-year pilot stage in March 1999, and has continued to support existing schemes and take on new ones since April 1999 during an interim period of evaluation and decision-making about the future. It has examined data collection processes, the quality and uses of data collected, training and support needs, and the query software. Materials produced by this phase of the project are available to all data collection schemes in the NHS, and many of them are available on this website. The data extracted, analysed and fed back, however, are only available to the participating schemes.
